SANGETSAR LAKE

This lake was formed as a result of the earthquake of 1973. The road to the lake starts from Zemithang and has 52 hairpin bends! It has a unique make–there are dead trees in the middle of the lake. During winter, the Sangetsar Lake freezes, and the orange-blue, as well as the glaring sun on the icy surface, renders the lake quite pretty to behold. It is located about 30 km from the nearest town, Tawang. The lake lies at a height of 3,708 m above sea level. Tourists can hire vehicles from Tawang to reach this lake. There is a small parking base close to the lake with a food stall.

This lake is originally called Sangetsar Lake, but it was once nicknamed as Madhuri Lake. How so, you may wonder. Well, in the 90s, a song from the Bollywood movie named Koyla starring Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit was shot at the lake site. The song became famous and so did the lake, and soon after the lake was also named as Madhuri Lake. This name is an unfailing crowd-puller, and many Bollywood lovers have visited the place to admire its enchanting beauty.
